Growing Zones
Compact color, zero fuss. Jane Magnolia brings saturated, tulip-shaped flowers in rich purple-pink that open to soft white interiors, all on a naturally compact, multi-stem form that fits small gardens and front yards. The buds break a bit later than many magnolias, so spring displays are less likely to be nipped by late frost.
Expect a strong bloom flush in mid to late spring with occasional summer repeats, followed by clean, green foliage that turns bronze-gold in fall. Use it as a focal point near an entry, anchor a mixed border, or set one in a large container for patio drama.
Jane Magnolia Care
Plant in full sun to part shade; aim for 6 or more hours of direct light for the heaviest bloom. Provide moist, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH of 5.5 to 6.5; improve clay with compost and sharp sand, and avoid waterlogged sites. Water deeply the first two years about once per week; afterward, water when the top 2 inches of soil are dry, especially during summer heat. Mulch 2 to 3 inches over the root zone, keeping it a few inches off the stems.
Feed in early spring with a slow-release, acid-loving shrub fertilizer. Prune only as needed right after flowering to shape and remove dead or crossing wood; avoid heavy summer or winter pruning. Hardy in Zones 4 to 8; in colder areas, choose a spot with morning sun and afternoon wind protection. If your plant is grafted, remove any suckers that sprout below the graft.
Jane Magnolia Spacing
For a specimen, allow 8 to 12 feet of open space (mature size typically 10 to 15 feet tall by 8 to 12 feet wide). When massing or creating a loose screen, plant 6 to 8 feet on center. Keep at least 4 to 6 feet from walls, fences, and paths to accommodate the natural spread. For containers, use a sturdy pot 20 to 24 inches wide with excellent drainage and a high-quality, acidic potting mix; elevate the container on pot feet and rotate a quarter-turn each month for even growth. Light staking may help young, multi-stem plants establish a balanced framework.
