Nepeta x faassenii Junior Walker™ ('Novanepjun'), commonly called Junior Walker™ Catmint, is a compact dwarf form of ‘Walker’s Low’ with unlimited uses. It blooms all summer with spikes of scented, lavender-blue flowers. It has small gray-green leaves that have a minty smell. It is highly adaptable to most garden conditions and a choice plant for attracting pollinators.
This perennial has a spreading, dense habit that reaches 12 – 18 inches tall and 2 – 3 feet wide. It is a sterile form of nepeta that doesn’t self-seed. This catmint is easy to grow and tolerates drought, humidity and heat. It is cold hardy to zone 4 and resistant to deer and rabbits. The flowers attract swarms of bees and butterflies in the summer. Use it at the front of perennial borders and foundation plantings for cottage and Mediterranean style gardens. Junior Walker™ also looks great in container combinations as the ‘thriller’.
Junior Walker™ Catmint Care
This perennial grows well in full sun to part shade. It is highly adaptable to different soil types, including clay and sand, and is not picky about soil pH. It also adaptable to different moisture levels, as long as the soil drains well. Water consistently during the first summer to establish the roots. It will develop drought tolerance after a few growing cycles.
Cut the foliage back before flowering to keep its shape compact. Removing spent flowers will encourage it to rebloom.
Junior Walker™ Catmint Spacing
For mass planting, space individual plants approximately 24 inches apart, center on center, and stagger the rows.If growing in a container, select a pot that is weather resistant with good drainage. The pot diameter should be at least 20 inches.
