Peonies are one of the most loved bloomers in the late spring garden. Their familiar and intoxicating smell signals that the lazy days of summer are soon on the way. Peonies are the reliable bloomers in the garden, year after year. Sometimes generation after generation. Paeonia ‘Karl Rosenfield’ is one of the best known of the red colored flowers. It has been in cultivation for over 100 years.
Karl Rosenfield has sturdy stems that are able to support the frothy crimson blooms with just a bit of staking. A moist and average soil is best for these prolific bloomers. Peonies are great as single specimen plants, especially when plante with lower growing late spring bloomers such as Tulips. They are also stunning when planted in large drifts of one or two colors. The late spring blooms will produce interesting seed pods in the summer. When the plant is left to dieback naturally, the autumn brings on a range of fiery reds and oranges to the foliage as it dies back for the Winter.
Karl Rosenfield Peony Care
Peonies appreciate moist, free draining soil that has little chance of being waterlogged in the winter months. The blooms are much more profuse in a full sun situation, although peonies will tolerate a bit of late afternoon shade. Fertilizing peonies is easily done once in the growing season. Once the stems begin to grow a dose of a balanced, slow release fertilizer is all they need to have strong stems and blooms, Peony very much dislike being moved in the garden and rarely need dividing.
Karl Rosenfield Double Peony will need regular deadheading to keep the plant producing blooms as long as possible. Leaving the last blooms on the plant will let the Peony produce decorative seed pods that give this perennial interest in the garden until the first heavy frosts. The broad range of growing zones makes this a great plant for almost every garden, although extra protection from a mulch of leaves or other organic material is a good idea for the colder zones. Deer very rarely give Peonies a second thought, even when in full bloom.
Karl Rosenfield Peony Spacing
Karl Rosenfield Double Peony requires a spacing of 2 - 3 feet on the center of the plants. This allows enough air circulation around the leaves and stems to prevent pests and diseases.
