Growing Zones
If you’re a warmer climate gardener, Lime Sizzler Firebush will add a pop of bright chartreuse foliage to your garden year-round. Between its bright yellow and green variegated foliage and bright red-orange flowers, have the word sizzle in this plant’s name is very apropos.
The red-orange flowers appear at the end of each stem from late spring into fall. Hummingbirds and butterflies will be attracted to the nectar that the dazzling long season blossoms provide making this plant environmentally friendly and fun to watch. Hamelia patens ‘Grelmsiz’ should be planted in a full sun location in USDA hardiness zones 9 to 11. It will reach a height and width of 4 to 5 feet in a mounded form. In colder climates, Lime Sizzler Firebush can be grown as an annual or in a container and brought inside before the threat of frost.
Lime Sizzler Firebush Care
In general, camellias prefer moist but well-drained acidic soils rich in organic matter. They will tolerate full sun conditions but prefer morning sun and shade or filtered sunlight in the afternoon. Spring is the best time to top dress with fertilizer. Water during extended periods of drought but be careful not to overwater them.
Pruning Lime Sizzler Firebush is not required. However, you may prune to shape if desired. So so in late winter or early spring if the plant does not die back over the winter. If you cut back in summer, you will reduce the amount of flowers the plant produces.
Lime Sizzler Firebush Spacing
Space plants 3 feet apart to create a hedge or solid grouping and 6 or more feet apart if you want room for other plants between them.
