Lomandra Platinum Beauty adds a clean sweep of green-and-white variegated foliage to dry, sunny plantings year-round. Lomandra longifolia ‘Roma 13’ PP25962 forms a graceful clump of narrow leaves edged and striped in creamy white, creating a bright look in containers, slopes, and low-water beds. It grows about 2 to 3 feet tall and wide, staying compact enough for foundation edges and modern patio plantings. This is the one to use when a garden needs the movement of an ornamental grass with tougher evergreen performance.
This Australian grass-like perennial is not a true grass, but it fills the same design role with better tolerance for heat, drought, salt air, and difficult sites. The foliage arches outward from a dense crown, and creamy yellow flower spikes may appear from fall through spring, adding subtle texture close to the leaves. Lomandra Platinum Beauty is evergreen where winter temperatures stay above about 20°F and performs best in Zones 8-10. Use it around pools, along walkways, on slopes, in rock gardens, in coastal plantings, or with succulents where strong drainage and low water needs are priorities.
Lomandra Platinum Beauty Care
Plant Lomandra Platinum Beauty in full sun to part shade, with brighter light resulting in the strongest variegation. It grows in well-drained clay, loam, sandy, or silty soil and tolerates lower-fertility sites once established. A soil pH of about 4.5 to 7.0 is suitable; drainage is more important than rich soil.
Water deeply after planting, and keep the root zone lightly moist during the first growing season. Established plants require little extra water and handle dry periods well, though occasional irrigation keeps foliage fresher in extreme heat. Fertilize lightly in spring, or skip feeding in fertile soil. Mulch thinly around the plant to reduce weeds, keeping the crown open so water does not collect in the center.
Lomandra Platinum Beauty usually needs no pruning. Remove any browned blades by hand or cut back lightly in early spring if winter weather leaves the clump worn. In climates colder than Zone 8, grow it in a container and move it to a protected location before hard freezes.
Lomandra Platinum Beauty Spacing
Space Lomandra Platinum Beauty 18 to 24 inches apart for mass plantings, or 4 feet apart when each clump should stand on its own. For containers, use a pot at least 18 to 22 inches wide with drainage holes and a gritty, well-drained potting mix. Potted plants need occasional deep watering in summer and should dry slightly between soakings.
Grow Lomandra Platinum Beauty with hens & chicks, ice plants, lavender, or rosemary in sunny, fast-draining beds with minimal supplemental water. Juniper bushes and St. John’s wort make good landscape partners, adding evergreen mass and seasonal flowers around the fine variegated foliage. In containers, use purslane, lantana, or marigold for sun-loving color that can handle the same lean, well-drained conditions.
