Blue Eyed Grass is a North American native that works in the hoe garden as an edging plant or in groups in a naturalistic planting scheme. Lucerne Blue Eyed Grass has the characteristic clumping grass-like foliage and blue flowers. The Flowers on Lucerne can be up to 1 inch in diameter and have a lovely true blue coloring. The bloom time is quite long from late spring to midsummer. When the blooming is finished the foliage remains fresh and strong throughout the rest of the summer and fall.
Blue Eyed Grass is an extremely low maintenance perennial. Very few pests or diseases are an issue. Deer usually pass this by. Blue Eyed Grass fit into cottage gardens, rock gardens or in naturalized groups in a meadow or native garden. The compact size and durability of this herbaceous perennial makes it a good addition to eco plantings such as green roof installations or at the edges of a rain garden plan.
Lucerne Blue Eyed Grass Care
Lucerne Blue Eyed Grass prefers a full sun to part shade spot in the garden. Well drained and moist soil will keep the foliage perky and vigorous. Supplemental watering will be required during periods of high heat or drought. Mulching the soil will help to make it more moisture retentive over time. Organic compost or leaves in the fall make the best mulch. Blue Eyed Grass thrive in neutral to alkaline soil.
Annual maintenance will involve cleaning up of the previous years’ foliage in the early spring. A well balanced, slow release fertilizer may also be applied in the early spring. Most native plants perform better without extra fertilizing, although if blooming has declined over the years a light feeding will help boost Blue Eyed Grass. Dividing clumps every 3-4 years will also help to reinvigorated and multiply plants.
Lucerne Blue Eyed Grass Spacing
Lucerne Blue Eyed Grass has a very compact and tidy growth habit that makes it easy to add to an already established garden plan. The mature height and width is 8-10 inches. Spacing plants at 10 inches on center is recommended.
