For a truly red hydrangea, Magical® Ruby Red Hydrangea could just be the answer. With its large red blooms that sit proudly on dark green foliage, this really is a stunning hydrangea. As a repeat bloomer, its flowers will keep coming, either to shine in the garden or to cut for indoor arrangements. This mophead Magical® Ruby Red Hydrangea remains a compact 3-4 feet high, making it ideal for most spaces.
Originally from Asia and America, this cultivar is suited to growing in zones 5 to 9. Magical® Ruby Red is strong and striking enough to be grown alone either in a border or a container. However, for the greatest impact, it can be grown en masse or as an informal hedge. Over time, the blooms take on a darker shade of red, extending the seasonal interest.
Magical® Ruby Red Hydrangea Care
To make the most of its magnificent blooms, Magical® Ruby Red Hydrangea is best grown in full sun to partial shade. When it comes to soil, this hydrangea prefers to be grown in a fertile medium with a neutral pH. Watering is key to helping this shrub establish; water regularly afterwards so the soil is kept on the moist side. To encourage its lush foliage and blooms, a balanced, slow-release fertilizer can be applied in spring.
To avoid removing future flower buds, any pruning is best performed in early spring. However, any dead branches or stems can be cut away at any time during the year. Potted plants should be placed under cover during the winter to protect them from the low temperatures.
Magical® Ruby Red Hydrangea Spacing
In time, Magical® Ruby Red Hydrangea can grow to an eventual 3-4 feet high and wide. Often planted out in groups for maximum impact, each plant should be spaced 3 to 4 feet apart.
