Pansies are a favorite cold-weather container plant. These hardy annuals bloom nonstop until summer when temperatures heat up. After a short dormancy in summer, pansies will begin to regrow and provide a flush of color through the fall. Majestic Giants Marina Blotch has the largest flowers of pansies, displaying a lovely tricolor pattern of cream and lavender with a velvety midnight blue center. The medium green foliage makes a great filler in containers and hanging baskets either in sun or shade.
Pansies are commonly sold as hardy annuals although they are tender perennials in the USDA zones 6-8, often setting seed and multiplying year after year. Growing zones 9 and higher will have the most success growing pansies through the winter as part of seasonal containers and temporary bedding plants. Pansies prefer consistent moisture and fertile soil to support their profuse blooming.
Majestic Giants Marina Shades Blotch Pansy Care
Majestic Giants Marina Blotch Pansy will grow happily in a wide variety of garden locations, including those in full sun to shade. Garden-grown plants require good drainage and a neutral soil pH. Mulching at the time of planting helps to control weed growth and increase moisture retention in the soil. Compost, finely shredded leaves, or arborist chips are all fantastic choices for mulch. Fertilize once a month with a formula for blooming annuals.
Container-grown plants require plenty of drainage holes and an all-purpose, peat-free potting mix with added perlite or vermiculite to retain moisture. Fertilize with a diluted liquid seaweed or fish emulsion every 2-3 weeks.
Regular deadheading of spent flowers helps to prevent self-seeding and prolong the blooming stage. Cutting plants back by half their height in the summer helps clean up the plants and set them up to regrow when the cooler temperatures of fall arrive.
Majestic Giants Pansies can be grown indoors through the winter months. The trick to growing healthy pansies indoors is to provide bright light exposure and plenty of humidity to counteract the drying effects of central heating and dry winter air. A window with southern exposure is ideal for growing your pansies, although an east- or west-facing window with bright light is also acceptable. Bring plants indoors well before freezing temperatures are forecast, and reduce watering to once a week, allowing the top 1-2 inches of soil to dry between sessions. Stop fertilizing altogether in winter until new growth emerges in the spring.
Majestic Giants Marina Shades Blotch Pansy Spacing
Spacing for annual bedding plants is generally closer than perennials in the garden. Space plants 12 inches apart, center on center, to create a dense ground cover. Pansies growing in containers and hanging baskets can also be planted quite close together at 6 inches apart. A 10-inch hanging basket will comfortably hold 3 plants.
