Although commonly grown to help produce berries on a female plant, the Male Skimmia is a great shrub in its own right. Known botanically as Skimmia japonica, the Male Skimmia produces aromatic, dark green foliage and stunning pink buds that open into tiny white and sweetly scented flowers. Growing to around 4 feet, this evergreen shrub remains manageable and is great for adding some winter interest and structure to the garden.
Being deer resistant, this shrub is well suited to rural planting schemes. As a slow-growing and low-maintenance shrub, it pretty much fends for itself once established, apart from some watering and minimal pruning. Suitable for growing in zones 7 to 9, the Male Skimmia is ideal for growing in a mixed border or for forming a low and informal hedge. This species originates from parts of Asia.
Male Skimmia Care
For the Male Skimmia to thrive, it should be planted in a slightly acidic and fertile soil that is kept moist. It prefers a partially shaded site, as too much sun especially in the afternoon can lead to bleaching of the foliage. To help maintain its health and encourage lush growth, a fertilizer formulated for acid-loving shrubs can be applied in early spring. Regular watering is essential until this shrub has settled in and afterwards to ensure the soil is kept moist, but not overly wet.
This Male Skimmia rarely requires any pruning. However, if desired, you can shape this shrub in the winter when it is dormant. It should be noted that the skimmia shrub is poisonous if ingested.
Male Skimmia Spacing
Over the years, the Male Skimmia can grow to a size of around 3 to 4 feet high and wide. If planting this stunning shrub out as part of a group or hedge, a spacing of 3 to 4 feet is advisable depending on the desired effect.
