The white and purple petals of the Mariposa Autumn Bearded Iris are bound to make a statement wherever you grow it. Botanically known as Iris germanica 'Mariposa Autumn', this iris grows to around 24 to 30 inches tall and produces green sword-like foliage for vertical interest. Flowering in spring, the added bonus of the Mariposa Autumn Bearded Iris is that it is a rebloomer and flowers longer than many others.
The Mariposa Autumn Bearded Iris is a clump-forming perennial that will rebloom year after year. Deer and rabbit resistant, this iris is perfect for both urban and rural locations. Once planted, this bearded iris will develop drought tolerance and require minimal maintenance. Being tall, the Mariposa Autumn Bearded Iris is best suited to the middle of an herbaceous border or cut flower patch.
Mariposa Autumn Bearded Iris Care
To grow well and produce the best blooms, the Mariposa Autumn Bearded Iris should be planted in moist, yet free-draining soil in full sun. Good drainage is a must, as waterlogged or heavy soils can lead to the rhizomes rotting. Fertilize with a general-purpose feed in spring, and divide clumps every 3 to 4 years. Mariposa is suitable for growing in USDA zones 3 to 8
Removing spent blooms will encourage reblooming. Plant the rhizome so the top is above soil level to expose it to sunlight and prevent rotting.
Mariposa Autumn Bearded Iris Spacing
In the right conditions, the Mariposa Autumn Bearded Iris can grow to 24 to 30 inches tall and 18 to 24 inches wide. A spacing of around 18 inches will allow the plants to fill in over time.
