Growing Zones
The Moonlight Climbing False Hydrangea is a stunning perennial vine that will quickly become the focal point of a landscape. The pale, gray-blue, heart-shaped foliage has green and pink veining, making the leaves stand out almost as much as the flowers. White hydrangea-like flowers bloom in clusters, known as an inflorescence. Enjoy the lovely flowers in early summer. The Schizophragma hyd. Moonlight is rare and easy to grow.
This vining shrub is a skilled climber and a wonderful choice to grow along a fence for privacy or to cover a building with foliage and flowers. The vines will turn anything within reach into support; if you don’t give it a trellis or arbor, it will find something to climb. It can take time for this plant to become established, but once it feels at home, it is a vigorous grower. This is a deciduous plant, and the shedding bark on the woody vines provides visual interest during the winter. The Moonlight Climbing False Hydrangea grows in zones 5 through 8.
Moonlight Climbing False Hydrangea Care
Plant the Moonlight Climbing False Hydrangea in a shady spot with partial sunlight. Rich, well-drained soil with medium moisture is preferred. Water young plants consistently, but established plants are drought tolerant and only need water during dry, hot weather. Give the plant a couple of years to acclimate before applying an annual dose of balanced fertilizer during the spring.
Prune the Moonlight Climbing False Hydrangea in late winter or early spring as necessary. Trimming the vines will encourage full, dense growth.
Moonlight Climbing False Hydrangea Spacing
At 20 to 30 feet tall and 10 to 15 feet wide, the Moonlight Climbing False Hydrangea is a sizable vining shrub that significantly impacts a landscape. Space plants 8 - 9 feet apart so the vines have room to spread but can still engulf a trellis or support, creating a wall of greenery. One plant can comfortably grow in an 18-inch container.
