This lovely dark pink/magenta, lightly fragrant, spring creeping phlox is an improved variety that retains all of the good attributes of older varieties, and gives gardeners a sigh of relief and an exclamation of awe when it is planted in garden beds. No longer do you have to rip and tear out creeping phlox in the late spring when it invades your garden bed and takes over! Blooming up to a week or so earlier than older varieties, and producing more blooms than ever, Mountainside Majestic Magenta will check off all the boxes for the perfect spring to summer blooming ground cover. Bees and butterflies will be frequent visitors to your garden, providing valuable food for the pollinators.

Native to North America where it grows in sandy, rocky hillsides and roadways, Spring Phlox has been a favorite of gardeners everywhere for its beautiful bright spring color that rivals the daffodils for its fresh color. Blooming early with the spring bulbs, Mountainside Majestic Magenta will carpet your garden bed, hillside or landscape with a slow creeping ground cover that is literally smothered with blooms from early spring until summer. Hardy in Zones 4 to 8, this new spring introduction will please even the most cynical of gardeners with its easy care and now less invasive habits. Coastal gardeners will appreciate the salt tolerance and ease of planting in sandy soils.

Mountainside Majestic Magenta Phlox Care

Plant creeping phlox in the spring after the danger of the last frost has passed. Once established it can handle sub zero temperatures as well as the hot summertime temperatures of the MidSouth regions. Tolerating poor, rocky soils, Spring Phlox is going to do best in sandy loam soil with an average need for water each season. Only slightly drought tolerant, you will want to set a watering schedule for these lovely small but mighty perennials to supplement rainfall when it is inadequate. They tolerate a variety of soil pH ranges, preferring to be slightly acidic to neutral at 5.8 to 6.5. Plant in full sun for best flowering. Fertilize with a slow release fertilizer in late winter, early spring for a fresh green burst of foliage quickly smothered with a sea of color. Mulch to control weeds as they are difficult to remove among the phlox once they invade. Prevention is better than remediation once weeds start to proliferate.

Deadheading is not necessary to get a full season of blooms, but shearing lightly once blooms fade may bring about a rebloom. Certainly it will help to strengthen the plant, create more branching and a more compact plant so even if it does not bloom again later in the season, you will have an attractive green ground cover to see you through the rest of the season. Divide plants every 3 to 4 years to create a larger ground cover area and relieve crowding. In the late spring, early summer, dig up the plant with all its roots, divide in half and replant at the same depth it was prior.

Mountainside Majestic Magenta Phlox Spacing

Space your plants about 24 to 28 inches apart. These plants, once they reach maturity, will grow to about 6 inches tall but spread out to 28 inches wide and will slowly fill in the areas in between plants. They are susceptible to powdery mildew when exposed to constant or prolonged wet conditions so water early in the day and give them time to dry off in the sun prior to nightfall to help prevent disease. Want all the bright spring color without all the work to keep them in bounds by summertime? Plant Mountainside Majestic Magenta Hybrid Spring Phlox this spring and enjoy the extra time you are going to gain with much less maintenance on this lovely perennial ground cover.
