Brilliant clusters of deep pink flowers are the most outstanding feature of the My Girl shrub rose. The ruffled blooms appear throughout the summer in groups of 5 to 30. This shrub rose also has low maintenance needs, with a compact, upright habit that is easy to manage and offers excellent disease resistance. The showy flowers, which each last for a week, attract bees and have a gentle fragrance, making them ideal for cut flower arrangements.
The My Girl is an excellent performer in both cool and warmer areas, needing no winter protection as far north as zone 4. The medium green foliage is nearly evergreen and highly resistant to spot diseases. This reblooming rose makes an excellent specimen plant surrounded by annuals or low shrubs. It also has long flexible stems that can be tied to a trellis to perform as a low climber or several can be planted in a row to form a flowering hedge.
My Girl Shrub Rose Care
This shrub rose will perform best in a site with full sun. It prefers well-drained, fertile soils within a moderate pH range. In sandy areas, enrich the soil with ample organic matter. Unlike with many roses, the superb disease resistance of the My Girl means routine spraying for diseases is not required. The My Girl has some ability to withstand drought, but regular watering to maintain soil moisture ensures maximum blooms. Fertilize the bush in spring and early summer and mulch around it each fall to achieve the best possible results.
Prune the My Girl in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Remove any dead, damaged, or rubbing branches and lightly cut back any out of place stems to maintain the plant’s shape.
My Girl Shrub Rose Spacing
The My Girl shrub rose grows 3 to 5 feet tall and wide. To create the look of a continuous, dense hedge, plant these roses 2 feet apart. If utilizing the My Girl as a single specimen plant or combining it with other types of plants, space it 4 to 5 feet away from other perennials or shrubs.
