Bring some elegance to your garden with this exquisite delphinium. New Millennium™ Pink Punch has deep pink, frilled flowers with dark purple centers called bees. It has beautiful green leaves that are deeply lobed. The flowers rise majestically, on strong stems, to a height of 36-60 inches. These long bloomers attract butterflies and hummingbirds from early summer to fall.
New Millennium™ delphiniums have improved tolerance of heat and humidity, therefore they fare better in warmer climates than the Pacific hybrids. Hybridized in New Zealand, they are long lived and cold hardy. Neither deer nor rabbits like to eat them. Use these beauties in mass plantings or in small groups. Place them in the background of a perennial bed. They are stunning as a specimen or focal point – make them a ‘thriller’ in a combination container. Cut fresh, or dried, the flowers enhance bouquets.
New Millennium Pink Punch Larkspur Care
Plant them in a well-drained site where there is some shelter from strong winds. Dig a hole twice the diameter of the container and deep enough for the top of the root ball to be level with the soil. The delphinium may require staking – do this early in the growing season to prevent damage to the root system. For that reason, place stakes well away from the plant. A triangle of three stakes with two rows of string around them works well. (Never attach string to the flower stem.) They like evenly moist soil and should not be allowed to dry out. Water them every 7-10 days in dry weather. Delphiniums prefer fertile soil with an alkaline or neutral pH. They are heavy feeders so give them a balanced, liquid fertilizer every 2-3 weeks. Grow them in either a full sun or mostly sunny location.
Remove faded flowers so the plant does not expend energy on seed production, although you may want to allow some self-seeding for next year. If you cut back lanky or spent stems to one half, you will force new growth from the base. When growing them in a container you may use a potting mix that is formulated for roses. Add a top dressing of slow-release fertilizer that is high in nitrogen. Move the container to a sheltered spot for over-wintering. Note that delphiniums are toxic to humans and animals.
New Millennium Pink Punch Larkspur Spacing
In the landscape place the plants 18-24 inches apart. For container growing, use an 8-10-inch pot or try a wooden half-barrel. The container must be large enough for root development.
