Vibrant orange flowers with black eyes peep out from handsome heart-shaped leaves on this long-blooming vine. The showy, 1½-inch blossoms unfurl with abandon. The vine grows by twisting around supports in a spiral fashion as opposed to producing tendrils. It reaches 60-96 inches, preferably on a support structure rather than rambling. Orange A-Peel® Black-Eyed Susan Vine’s attributes include heat tolerance, fast growing, and fun for children.
The brightly colored flowers attract hummingbirds and other pollinators. The plant is native from tropical East Africa to eastern South Africa. Use it as a thriller in the landscape and containers. When planted in a hanging basket, it will climb up the chains, as well as cascading over the sides, to delightful effect. Plant it instead of morning glories to go up fences, arbors, or trellises. Place a support in a container or flower bed for a bright focal point.
Orange A-Peel® Black-Eyed Susan Vine Care
Give this easy-care vine a controlled-release fertilizer at planting. It would benefit from a light feeding of complete fertilizer every 4-6 weeks in the landscape and every 2-3 weeks in pots. It does not require deadheading. Plant in rich, moderately moist soil in spring once the soil has warmed.
Locate in an area of part sun to full sun and water moderately. Containers should drain well, bearing in mind that Orange A-Peel® Black-Eyed Susan Vine does not like soggy soil nor too-dry conditions.
Orange A-Peel® Black-Eyed Susan Vine Spacing
Place a support structure in the center of a 12-inch container; plant the thunbergia. Around it, add two Supertunia® and two calibrachoa for a lovely combination. In the border, space support structures 14-16 inches apart. You may want to plant Black-eyed Susan Vines solo as they can overtake nearby plants.
