The abundant, colorful blossoms of Passionate Blush™ Wandflower allure both pollinators and guests! The fragrant flowers put on a spectacular show in late spring until frost, with buds appearing red before turning into a blushing pink as the wand-like inflorescence blooms. The stunning color contrast ensures continuous interest for the entire growing season. This compact, tidy perennial has attractive, red-tinged to green leaves with a mounding, erect form.
Known botanically as Gaura lindheimeri, Wandflower is native to many of the Southernmost U.S. states. Growing to 18” tall, this drought-tolerant and deer-resistant plant is a wonderful addition to mixed borders and mass plantings. Its dense form makes it a great candidate for container plantings, and looks marvelous when paired with other floriferous annuals and perennials. The upright nature and continual blooms of Passionate Blush™ Wandflower also make it easy to harvest for flower arrangements.
Passionate Blush™ Wandflower Care
Full sun is required to maintain the steady, silky flowers of this stunner! Hardy to USDA Zones 6 to 8, it does best when planted in well-drained soil. Perfect for planting in difficult-to-cultivate soils, Passionate Blush™ Wandflower tolerates dry or sandy soils over a large pH range. Plant it in spring or summer and water it well until established. Fertilize lightly, as too much nitrogen can result in more foliage than flowers. This perennial is very adaptable to a variety of growing conditions, and its low water usage makes it an easy, low-maintenance addition to all sunny landscapes.
While deadheading is not required, shearing back the plant in summer can encourage a stronger wave of blooms in fall. Shearing the plant in spring will lead to a bushier habit. Prune the entire plant to the ground after the first hard frost in fall. Insulate the soil with several inches of straw or mulch if Passionate Blush™ Wandflower is marginally hardy to your zone. It can also be treated as an annual in colder regions.
Passionate Blush™ Wandflower Spacing
Place this wandflower in the front or center of mixed borders so it can be seen. In mass plantings, it can be spaced about 18” apart for an eye-catching array of blooms. Like many other wandflowers, it may slowly spread 18-24” to form a clump.
