Peacock™ Red Flowering Kale makes a gorgeous addition to any fall and winter seasonal container or window box. The outer glaucous leaves continually open, revealing more brilliantly red, fresh foliage as the season progresses. Although this frilly-leaved Brassica plant is considered edible, it doesn't have the same flavor as less ornamental varieties.
Add Peacock™ Red Flowering Kale to perennial borders or pots on a deck or patio. Combine it with other cold season annuals for a colorful display in window boxes and even hanging baskets. Depending on the plant combination, ornamental kale can be used as a thriller, filler or even (modified) spiller plant. Red Flowering Kale encounters few pests and disease and is even tolerant of light deer browsing.
Peacock™ Red Flowering Kale Care
Kale thrives in full sun and well-draining soil. Ensure that drainage is good throughout the winter and that the garden bed or pot is not sitting in standing water at any point. Garden-grown kale can be fertilized at the time of planting by applying a granular slow-release feed. Container plants will require fertilizing every month with a diluted liquid seaweed or fish emulsion product when temperatures remain above 50 degrees F. Peacock™ Kale does not require pinching to promote branching. The beauty of this plant is its ever-expanding central leaves, which continue growing for months.
Flowering Kale makes a great fall decoration in all of the USDA hardiness zones. Although Red Flowering Kale tolerates a few light frosts, it may start dying back during a hard freeze in zones colder than 10. Remove plants as they begin to break down, and add them to your home compost or yard waste bin.
Peacock™ Red Flowering Kale Spacing
Flowering Kale can continue to grow throughout the winter in USDA zones 10-11, where it may reach well past its usual 8-12 inches high. Space plants 12 inches apart if planting in a bedding display. Kale can also be grown in containers for seasonal color. Use 3 plants to fill up a 12-inch pot or 16-inch window box.
