Sugar Buzz® Bee Balm
Big Bee Balm Color. Compact Garden Habit.
Sugar Buzz® Bee Balm packs raspberry, cherry, pink, lavender, purple, and blue-purple flowers onto compact, well-branched plants. These summer-blooming perennials attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds and stay upright and compact compared with traditional bee balm.

Compact Bee Balm With a Full-Sized Summer Show
Sugar Buzz® Bee Balm was bred for a shorter, well-branched habit with dense midsummer flowering. The series fits easily into perennial borders and containers, yet still supplies the fragrant foliage, cut flowers, and heavy pollinator activity gardeners expect from Monarda.
Compact, Well-Branched Plants
Most selections stay around 2 feet tall or less, putting the flowers at the right height for the middle of perennial borders, mass plantings, and large containers.
Better Mildew Resistance
Sugar Buzz® was bred with above-average resistance to powdery mildew, an important improvement for a perennial that is often challenged by this fungal disease.
A Pollinator Favorite
Tubular flowers provide nectar for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds during summer. The flower stems can also be cut for fresh arrangements.
From Raspberry and Cherry to Lilac and Blue-Purple
Flower color in this series includes saturated blue, pink, purple and red hues, perfect for building a single-color mass or combining several selections in one pollinator border.

Plant Several for a Dense Summer Block of Color
Sugar Buzz™ Bubblegum Blast grows about 20 to 24 inches tall and can spread 24 to 32 inches, giving it one of the broadest habits in the series.
That shape works well in repeated groups through a perennial border. Several plants create a larger pink flowering mass that stays upright and tidy even after rainstorms.
Pair it with lower perennials along the front and taller grasses, coneflowers, phlox, or other summer bloomers behind it.
Better Resistance Does Not Mean Mildew-Proof
Powdery mildew is one of the most common problems on bee balm. Sugar Buzz® selections were bred for above-average resistance, helping foliage stay attractive later into summer.
Plants still need adequate spacing, air movement around the foliage, and consistent moisture. Drought stress can make mildew problems worse.
Sugar Buzz® Bee Balm Quick Facts
Sun, Steady Moisture & Air Circulation Required
Bee balm is easy to establish when the root zone stays evenly moist and the foliage has room to dry between wet periods.
Full Sun Supports the Most Flowering
Give Sugar Buzz® at least five to six hours of direct light. Light afternoon shade can be beneficial in very hot climates, but heavier shade can reduce flowering and cause looser growth.
Moist and Well Drained
Bee balm performs best in moisture-retentive soil that drains freely. Organic matter can improve both moisture holding ability and soil structure.
Do Not Let Plants Stay Dry for Long
Water during extended dry periods, especially during flowering. Consistent moisture supports stronger growth and can help reduce stress associated with powdery mildew.
Remove Spent Flowers for a Neater Plant
Cutting off finished flower heads keeps the planting tidy and can extend the flowering period. Leave some later seed heads if winter texture or wildlife value is preferred.
Refresh Older Clumps Every Few Years
Bee balm expands from the outer edges of the clump. Divide mature plants when the center begins to thin or when the planting becomes crowded.
Cut Back Dormant Stems
Stems can be removed after frost or left standing through winter to protect the root crown from freeze-thaw cycles. If they remain, cut the old growth close to the ground in late winter or early spring before new shoots emerge.
Use Cherry Pops for Warm Summer Color
Cherry Pops stays near 2 feet tall, making it easy to weave through mixed perennial borders.
Middle of the Border
The 20- to 24-inch height places the flowers above many edging plants but below taller coneflowers, ornamental grasses, and larger summer perennials.
Repeat It Through a Pollinator Garden
Several Cherry Pops plants can carry one color through a mixed planting and create repeated nectar stops for hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees.

Sugar Buzz® Bee Balm FAQs
What is Sugar Buzz Bee Balm?
Sugar Buzz® is a series of compact Monarda bred by Walters Gardens for coordinated size, strong branching, summer flowers, and improved resistance to powdery mildew. Plant Addicts carries seven selections.
How tall does Sugar Buzz Bee Balm grow?
Most Sugar Buzz® varieties mature around 18 to 24 inches tall. Berry Taffy is shorter at roughly 14 to 16 inches, making it especially useful toward the front of a perennial border.
How wide does Sugar Buzz Bee Balm get?
Width depends on the variety. Many mature around 16 to 20 inches wide. Bubblegum Blast can spread 24 to 32 inches, and Berry Taffy reaches approximately 18 to 24 inches wide.
Is Sugar Buzz Bee Balm resistant to powdery mildew?
Sugar Buzz® Bee Balm has above-average resistance to powdery mildew, but it is not immune. Good air circulation, proper spacing, adequate sunlight, and steady soil moisture can further reduce disease pressure.
How much sun does Sugar Buzz Bee Balm need?
Full sun generally produces the strongest growth and flowering. Sugar Buzz® can tolerate part sun, especially in hot climates, but flowering may decrease as shade increases.
When does Sugar Buzz Bee Balm bloom?
Sugar Buzz® varieties flower primarily from midsummer into late summer. Individual timing varies slightly by cultivar and climate.
Does deadheading Bee Balm make it bloom longer?
Removing spent flower heads can extend flowering and improve the plant's appearance. Later flowers can also be left standing if seed heads and winter texture are desired.
Does Sugar Buzz Bee Balm attract hummingbirds?
Yes. Its tubular summer flowers attract hummingbirds along with bees and butterflies, making Sugar Buzz® useful in pollinator and wildlife gardens.
Is Sugar Buzz Bee Balm deer resistant?
Bee balm is generally considered deer resistant, and the Sugar Buzz® series is listed as deer resistant. No perennial is completely immune to browsing.
Does Sugar Buzz Bee Balm spread aggressively?
Sugar Buzz® develops expanding clumps, but it was bred for a more controlled garden habit than many taller traditional bee balms. Divide established clumps when they become crowded or begin thinning in the center.
Can Sugar Buzz Bee Balm grow in containers?
Yes. The compact habit works well in substantial patio containers. Container-grown plants usually need more frequent watering because the potting mix dries faster than garden soil.
Can Sugar Buzz Bee Balm be used as a cut flower?
Yes. The textured flower heads and sturdy stems can be cut for summer arrangements, and the aromatic foliage also adds fragrance and greenery.
Which Sugar Buzz Bee Balm is shortest?
Sugar Buzz® Berry Taffy is currently the shortest selection carried by Plant Addicts at approximately 14 to 16 inches tall.
Which Sugar Buzz Bee Balm has the bluest flowers?
Sugar Buzz® Blue Moon has the coolest flower tone in the collection, with blue-purple to lavender blooms.
Which Sugar Buzz Bee Balm has red flowers?
Sugar Buzz® Cherry Pops produces the warmest flower color in the series, with cherry red to deep pink-red blooms.
