Growing Zones
Few Gardenias are easier to grow than Pillow Talk®. Gardenia jasminoides ‘Pillow Talk’ features a dwarf compact growth habit that is slow growing and perfect for the smaller garden or container. The deep green, evergreen foliage makes a cooling backdrop for the extra large and showy white flowers that cover the shrub in spring. The heat resistance is exceptional, even at the upper ends of its hardiness zones.
Pillow Talk® Gardenia makes a versatile low-growing hedge along the side of a deck, patio, or driveway. Group a few shrubs under a window to enjoy the heady fragrance. Growing this exceptionally compact Gardenia in a container is an excellent option for smaller gardens or to add instant curb appeal to the front entrance of your home. Deer rarely browse the thick evergreen leaves of Gardenia and are not attracted to the flower buds.
Pillow Talk® Gardenia Care
Gardenia requires acidic to neutral soil that drains well, is rich in nutrients, and stays moist. A location in full sun will produce the best flower show, although Gardenias appreciate a bit of shade during the hottest part of the day to keep the flower buds and foliage from getting sunburned. Gardenias growing in pots will benefit from filtered sun or dappled shade to keep the roots cool and the potting soil from drying out. Ensure Gardenias receive one inch of water per week when planted in the garden. Mulching with organic material around the root zone will slow moisture evaporation in the soil and slowly add nutrients to the soil. Fertilize in the early spring with an extended-release granular fertilizer added to the soil as a topdressing. Look for formulations made for acid-loving landscape plants.
Pillow Talk® Gardenia has a slow growth habit that needs little pruning to keep the overall shape dense and compact. Lightly prune spent flowers and any damaged stems after blooming. Gardenias growing in containers will need regular watering during the summer and light, monthly fertilizing with a liquid feed.
Pillow Talk® Gardenia Spacing
The overall height of Pillow Talk® is 30-42 inches with a maximum spread of 3-4 feet. Each shrub should be planted at least 30 inches from one another. Choose a pot with excellent bottom drainage and at least a 16-inch diameter to grow Pillow Talk® individually in a container.
