Growing Zones
The Pin Oak is a balanced deciduous tree with ascending horizontal branches that puts on a stunning and colorful foliage display. Also known as Quercus palustris or Swamp Spanish Oak, this tree makes an excellent shade tree. The deeply lobed leaves are glossy green in the spring and summer but transition into russet, bronze, or red hues during the fall. This tree is large and elegant, and once it has had time to acclimate, the Pin Oak is also very low maintenance.
Use this oak tree to create a border or a focal point. The stately branches look stunning when this tree is used to line a street or driveway. The upright growth habit and naturally rounded canopy maintain a nice, natural shape. This tree will immediately become a home and hang out for birds and small animals, and it grows as a perennial in USDA zones 4 through 8.
Pin Oak Care
The Pin Oak requires full sun to reach its full potential. Plants grown in low light may have a difficult time acclimating. Soil should be rich, acidic, and well-drained. Water weekly for the first year, but the Pin Oak will not need as much care by the second year. Although, be prepared to step in and give the tree a drink during a drought, at least for the first few years.
Dead or damaged branches can be removed at any time of year, although it may be easier to trim the tree in the fall or winter after the foliage has dropped. The Pin Oak is not a heavy feeder, so it is not necessary to fertilize this tree.
Pin Oak Spacing
The Pin Oak is a large, upright tree. The branches can spread 40 to 60 feet wide and reach 50 to 70 feet tall. Plant this tree at least 15 to 20 feet away from buildings or other trees.
