Pink Icing® Blueberry may be the most intriguing Blueberry to come along in awhile. The semi-evergreen leaves produce a range of colors from the rosy pink of new growth in the spring to a dark turquoise of the winter leaves. Pink Icing® deserves a special place in the ornamental kitchen garden or in a container on the deck.
The tight, compact growth of Pink Icing® makes for almost no annual maintenance. The natural mounding shape grows slowly, but consistently. Birds and pollinators cannot resist the creamy flowers late in spring or the tasty berries in July. Pink Icing® makes a great addition to more ornamental gardens as well. The changing foliage colors would contrast wonderfully with Hydrangeas or Broadleaf Evergreens like Azalea and Rhododendron.
Pink Icing® Blueberry Care
All blueberries appreciate acidic soil and full sun. Shade early or late in the day is acceptable. Regular watering will be needed until the Blueberries are established. If they are planted in containers, regular watering will always be needed. Average texture soil is fine, although Blueberries will grow well in even the most heavy clay, as long as it is well drained.
Fertilizing of Pink Icing® is done early in the spring before the shrubs bloom. A fertilizer made for acid loving plants and is also slow release is recommended. Pruning is very rarely needed. Early in the spring any dead, dying, diseased or diagonal branches can be cut out to keep plants tidy.
Pink Icing® Blueberry Spacing
The compact shape of Pink Icing® makes the plant a natural fit to create an informal hedge or as an edging plant. A height of 3-4 feet and width of 3-4 feet stays naturally mounded. Spacing the shrubs at 30 inches on center is recommended. A pot of at least 24 inches in diameter is needed for container growing.
