Growing Zones
You’ll know spring has arrived when the Pinxterbloom Azalea blooms. Also known as Azalea periclymenoides, the flowers and foliage emerge simultaneously to usher in spring. White and pink flowers up to 1.5 inches across bloom in late April. The fragrant flowers have a faint honeysuckle scent.
This is a native plant, so while it needs regular attention when first planted, this Azalea is low maintenance once it has settled in. Use this deciduous shrub in beds or borders or to create a lovely flowering hedge. Plant it near doors or outdoor spaces so the sweet-smelling flowers can be thoroughly enjoyed. Hummingbirds and butterflies are drawn to the flowers. This shrub grows as a perennial in zones 4 through 8.
Pinxterbloom Azalea Care
This shrub needs full to partial sunlight, so choose a spot that receives 4 to 6 hours of daylight. The Pinxterbloom Azalea prefers rich, acidic, and moist soil that allows for good drainage. This plant has medium water needs, and established plants generally only need water during a dry spell. A layer of organic mulch will retain moisture and feed the plant. Give this Azalea an additional boost of nutrition by applying a fertilizer for acid-loving shrubs annually in the spring.
The Pinxterbloom Azalea has a rounded shape and does not normally need much pruning. Shape the plant as needed after the flowers fade, but before new buds are set.
Pinxterbloom Azalea Spacing
The Pinxterbloom Azalea has a woody, upright growth habit and reaches 6 to 8 feet tall and wide. Space this bush 6 to 8 feet apart.
