Heuchera Plum Pudding is a fantastic foliage plant for practically any garden space in need of extra color. This variety of coral bells showcases deep plum-colored foliage with silvery veins, which make the leaves shimmer in the sunlight. The leaves are large and ruffled, adding a fun texture to the garden. It blooms in sprays of tiny white flowers in early summer, which are attractive to hummingbirds. This is a low maintenance plant that deserves a spot at the front of a border where its dramatic color can be best appreciated.
Plum pudding grows in a low mound and forms larger clumps over time. It is disease and pest resistant, and exceptionally cold hardy (zone 3). Its foliage stays evergreen in locations with mild winters. It can be tucked into almost any garden space as long as it receives adequate moisture during the summer. Try growing it in containers with a mixed planting or along the edge of a pathway or garden border for pops of purple color.
Plum Pudding Coral Bells Care
Plum Pudding develops the best foliage color in part shade, with protection from hot afternoon sun. It prefers moist, well drained soil, rich in organic matter. Keep the soil evenly moist over the first summer to help establish a strong root system. The soil pH should be close to neutral. Topdress the area around the plant with high quality compost to reduce evaporation from the soil and protect the plant from winter heaving.
Remove any tattered or damaged leaves in early spring. Plum Pudding also benefits from deadheading to encourage a second bloom.
Plum Pudding Coral Bells Spacing
Space these plants approximately 1 foot apart between centers for mass planting. You can break off plantlets from the main crown to propagate more plants. Simply plant the offshoot in moist soil and wait for it to sprout new roots.
