The charming good looks of the Polka Dot Begonia introduce whimsy and unique foliage to a space. The Begonia maculata 'Wightii' has elongated heart-shaped leaves with wavy edges. The dark green foliage is dotted with silvery-white spots that look hand painted. The reverse side of each leaf is a flood of deep burgundy. The foliage is stunning, but the Polka Dot Begonia also blooms. Dainty white flowers bloom from late winter through early spring.
The mounded, upright growth habit gives this plant a full appearance. The unique foliage makes this plant a focal point and adds visual interest to a mixed bed or border. The Polka Dot Begonia is an excellent container plant and can serve as a filler or add unexpected foliage to a window box.
Polka Dot Begonia Care
Place the Polka Dot Begonia in full to partial shade. Choose a protected area because gusty wind can damage the delicate foliage. This plant prefers fertile, moist, and well-drained soil. Water when the top layer of the soil is dry, but avoid overly wet conditions. Fertilize with a high nitrogen product or a plant food intended for Begonias.
Remove dead or damaged growth as needed and pinch back the flowers when they fade. The Polka Dot Begonia grows as a perennial in zone 10 and is found as an annual in other areas. When the weather turns chilly, move this Begonia indoors to grow as a houseplant. The Polka Dot Begonia needs bright, indirect sunlight and increased humidity as a houseplant.
Polka Dot Begonia Spacing
The Polka Dot Begonia reaches 18 to 30 inches tall and wide. Space plants 18 to 30 inches apart to create a complete and continuous planting or grow one plant in a 16-inch wide container.
