Nicknamed Mexican Mint, Plectranthus is a vigorous, fast growing perennial in hot climates. Proven Accents Cerveza n’ Lime is a hybrid variety of this parent plant and has all of its good traits with none of its bad. Although vigorous and fast growing, this hybrid relative of the mint plant will not take over your garden.
Native to Africa, Madagascar and India, Zones 9a to 11b, Plectranthus is grown as an annual in Zones 2-8. Its silvery green foliage is the attraction here, providing a cool accent to the rich colors and textures of other sun loving annuals in your containers and landscape. In regions where night time temperatures are a little cooler than the day time, you will find this plant to be very vigorous as a mounding filler in your containers and a wonderfully fragrant addition to your scent garden.
Proven Accents Cerveza 'n Lime Plectranthus Care
Needing only moderate to moist soil with a pH range of 6.0 to 6.5, plectranthus requires only a medium fertilization program. Applying a controlled release fertilizer early in the season may be all that you need for the year. This heat tolerant plant requires full to part sun for best show and to keep it from getting leggy. Do not apply foliar fertilizer in full sun or you may experience leaf burn.
Deadheading is not required. Pinching back or shearing may be done to keep it within its bounds and promote branching should it look tired and limp. Some shade during hot sunny afternoons will be appreciated, especially if grown in containers. In long warm climates you may be gifted with small white, pink, purple or blue flowers, but this annual is grown primarily for its foliage.
Proven Accents Cerveza 'n Lime Plectranthus Spacing
Growing up to 18 inches tall and 12 inches wide, space your plantings about 8 to 12 inches apart for optimal health and to allow the plants to spread out. Pair this sun loving annual with lobularia, verbena, petunias, or calibrachoas for spring to summer interest. Cerveza n’ Lime also pairs well with the deep colors of coleus and caladiums, and is very dramatic at the base of grasses in your container or landscape gardens.
