This award-winning sweet potato vine is a great annual ground cover. Grown for its black-purple foliage, this plant has excellent heat tolerance. Proven Accents® Illusion® Midnight Lace Sweet Potato Vine is vigorous, growing up to 36” a week in the Deep South. Cooler temperatures and low humidity will cause them to stay more compact.
Native to Southeast Asia, Midnight Lace is a great addition to mixed planters, window boxes, containers and hanging baskets. As a short spiller, this beauty can trail up to 30 inches. In the landscape, Illusion creates a lush foliage backdrop that adds contrast to any greenery. The lobed leaf adds texture to mass plantings in your garden.
Illusion® Midnight Lace Sweet Potato Vine Care
Plant Ipomoea Illusion Midnight Lace in full-part sun (4-6+ hours) for best performance. Amend soil with compost before planting in the landscape or in beds. Fertilize with a water-soluble plant food regularly when planted in pots.
Whether you are planting this Ipomoea in the landscape or in containers, make sure the soil has good drainage and is friable. Ipomoea prefers moderate to moist soil, do not let it get to the point of wilting. Snip back this plant as needed to prevent it from overtaking less vigorous or smaller plants in containers.
Illusion® Midnight Lace Sweet Potato Vine Spacing
Ipomoea Illusion Midnight Lace reaches a height of 6-10 inches tall and has a spread of 24-36 inches. For best results space plants 10-12 inches apart when planting in beds. Using one Illusion Midnight Lace plant in a mixed 12-inch planter will result in a full, beautiful container, without overtaking the other plants.
