- Award-winning vine with chartreuse foliage!
Proven Accents Margarita Sweet Potato Vine (Ipomoea batatas) can add bright chartreuse color to gardens in part to full sun. The award-winning vine is known for its foliage interest, and that makes it an easy-care color choice. The vines can reach lengths of up to 6 feet, but only rise 4 to 10 inches above ground. This makes them a brightly colored groundcover in a bed or on a slope and a favorite choice in containers, hanging baskets, and window boxes since the long vines can cascade over the container’s edge.
Truly related to the sweet potatoes we love to eat, these plants from Southeast Asia have been bred for their foliage instead of for a sweet, rich tuber. With few unremarkable flowers, plenty of energy can go toward the bright chartreuse color that fills the nearly heart-shaped leaves. When you need to cover a lot of ground in the landscape, add these annual vines. They can withstand heat and there is no need to regularly prune or remove flowers.
Proven Accents Margarita Sweet Potato Vine Care
Plant your sweet potato vine in spring or early summer, after danger of nighttime frost has passed. If temperatures are below 55 degrees, it will not grow as quickly as it should. Choose a site with mostly sun and with soil that drains well or in a container filled with all-purpose potting mix. Keep the vine watered regularly so the soil is moist, but not soggy. Try not to let your plant dry out.
Proven Accents Margarita Sweet Potato Vine needs little fertilizer for growth and health. Applying a slow-release fertilizer at planting can give it a good start, and adding compost to the ground or container will keep it healthy. Monthly feedings with a water-soluble fertilizer during regular watering help container-grown sweet potato vines thrive during the growing season.
Proven Accents Margarita Sweet Potato Vine Spacing
For groundcover and larger coverage areas, place several of these sweet potato vines about 18 to 24 inches apart. In containers, be careful not to let the vine overtake small plants, but use it as a filler and spiller to complement taller, especially dark-colored, ornamentals.
