- Growing Zones 9 - 11
Commonly known as Silver Nickel Vine, Dichondra argentea is a versatile vine primarily grown for its beautiful silvery foliage that is reminiscent of a violet leaf. Its insignificant flowers appear early summer and are usually yellowish-white or white but its value as a foliar makes it a versatile trailing vine for rock walls, fence containers, hanging baskets and ground cover. It is a creeping vine when planted as ground cover since roots appear and take hold wherever the vine touches the ground, choking out weeds as it grows.
Native to SW United States and Northern Mexico, this vigorous vine has many landscape applications. Trailing up to 48 inches, it cascades out of window boxes and hanging baskets, beautifully complimenting a whole spectrum of colorful companions. In Zones 9a through 11b it is a tender perennial, but is frost intolerant and is treated as an annual in Zones 3-8. Plant out only after the danger of the last frost has passed.
Proven Accents® Silver Falls Dichondra Care
Care is simple. Just give it loose, excellent draining soil; alkaline, neutral or acidic; and water only when dry. Fertilize once a season when in ground and every couple months when in containers. In fact, when planted with other annuals and/or perennials, just adopt their care and maintenance habits and it will perform great for you. It is relatively disease and pest free making this an easy care plant.
Deadheading is not needed, and it is unusual to have to prune dichondra. As a ground cover, however, it can run over its bounds so cutting back is recommended if it gets unruly. Do you have a full sun to part shade rock wall or fence you would like to cover up? Dichondra will quickly fill and spill over the rock face or fence, creating a sea of silvery foliage for your viewing pleasure.
Proven Accents® Silver Falls Dichondra Spacing
Spacing is crucial when dichondra is used as a ground cover, Growing to about 6 inches tall and spreading out about 36 inches wide, space plants 18 to 24 inches apart. Pairing beautifully with vibrant, rich colors in contrast to its cool silvery color, you have a wide range of annuals to choose from for your containers. Petunia, verbena, calibrachoa, lantana, ipomoea, caladiums, coleus, impatiens...the list goes on. You will not regret adding Silver Falls Dichondra to your annual garden this spring.
