  • Height 6-16 Inches
  • Width 20-36 Inches
  • Use as a spiller when using in containers
  • Heart shaped bright chartreuse foliage!

Grown primarily for its foliage, Sweet Potato Vine is a relative of the Morning Glory vine and is a vivacious grower in your landscape as ground cover or on a trellis, or as an accent to a container or hanging basket. Proven Accents Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Lime has a heart shaped leaf, and a bright green chartreuse color that creates that color pop you crave when paired with darker dramatic foliage and bright colored blooms.

Ipomoea is native to the tropics in Mexico and the Americas, and thrive as perennials in Zones 11a and 11b. Improved hybrids such as Sweet Caroline are utilized as tender annuals in Zones 3-10 and make wonderful accent plants. They are a vine and can become quite aggressive, twining and climbing on anything in its path, so give it a trellis or hang it out of a container or hanging basket with upright annuals to keep it from getting unruly.

Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Lime Sweet Potato Vine Care

Caring for ipomoeas is easy. They are heat tolerant, enjoy a well drained mildly acidic to neutral soil with a pH of 6.0 to 6.5 and require watering on a regular schedule when in containers. Apply compost mulch when planting as a ground cover to help retain moisture and provide a light feeding for best results. Plant out when night time temperature reaches about 45 degrees and the danger of frost has passed. Fertilize with a slow release fertilizer initially and a water soluble fertilizer as needed throughout the summer.

Deadheading is not necessary as hybrid sweet potato vines rarely bloom. Prune back lightly or aggressively depending on the vigor of your vine, but Proven Accents Sweet Caroline has been bred to have more growth control than traditional sweet potato vines so you should not have to be too concerned about this. These plants are generally easy to care for.

Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Lime Sweet Potato Vine Spacing

Space your sweet potato vines about 10 to 12 inches apart. They will grow to about 16 inches tall and spread out about 36 inches wide, with a trailing habit of up to 20 inches. Placed in the foreground of your borders and edgings, or as a foundation in your large container garden, they will spill out attractively, quickly filling in the space provided. Pair this beautiful lime-colored accent vine with the dark and dramatic colors of petunia, calibrachoa, verbena, coleus, lantana, and caladiums, and with spike and arching annual grasses for outstanding spring to fall displays.
