- Unique colored sweet potato vine!
Uplevel your garden game this season with the exotic drama of this sophisticated “Sweet Potato Vine.” Sweetheart Red will win you over with multi-hued foliage combining lime, wine, and bronze tones. So much lush growth on such an easy-care trailer creates a fantastic foil for all the zesty combinations you can imagine. In addition to being a fast and vigorous grower, this cultivar is heat-tolerant. She grows an average of ten inches high and 40 inches wide, and can trail up to 30 inches.
While these are in fact related to your favorite sweet potatoes and yams from Southeast Asia, these Ipomea batatas tubers are not at all tasty – but they will make your plantings visually irresistible. Award-winning Sweetheart Red makes a perfect star for hanging and window baskets, patio planters, the edges of raised beds, and even as an annual groundcover in the open garden.
Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Red Sweet Potato Vine Care
Sweetheart Red is as accommodating a plant as other ipomeas, and just as vigorous. Accordingly, you may want to place her with other strong growers, like Verbenas or Supertunias, or give her plenty of space.
They will gladly grow in full- to part-sun, although full sun will bring out the most intense colors; shadier areas will encourage more green color in the foliage. They really take off in heat and humidity, so she is more than welcome in the South and Northeast. Gardeners in the South can see 36 inches of growth per week in ipomoeas. Cooler/drier climates will foster more compact growth. Because they need a certain level of heat to thrive, gardeners with cool springs might wait until the ground has warmed up to tomato-growing levels. All they ask is average water and some fertilizer (in the ground, once at planting; in containers, slow-release fertilizer applied regularly).
Sweet Caroline Sweetheart Red Sweet Potato Vine Spacing
In a container, spacing Sweetheart Red about ten inches apart should be sufficient. In the ground, you might want to allow more like 18-24 inches, because of the lengthy trailers which can reach 36-48 inches.
