Phlox is a flowering perennial known for colorful blooms, and the Purple Beauty Moss Phlox is a wonderful and unique specimen. The star-shaped flowers are lavender in color and feature dark purple accents near the eye. The petals have an indentation on the outer edge that resembles a heart shape. Narrow, green foliage provides a consistent backdrop for the beautiful flowers.

This cultivar has a dense, branched, mounded growth habit, and the stems naturally spread and creep. Purple Beauty Moss Phlox makes a wonderful groundcover on a bank or uneven ground. Plant in a raised bed or along the top of a retaining wall, and the flowering stems will cascade over the edge. This Phlox is easy to grow, deer-resistant, and is a perennial in USDA zones 3 through 8.

Purple Beauty Moss Phlox Care

Plant in rich soil that is moist and well-draining. Grow in full sun to partial shade, but try to locate in morning sun and afternoon shade in warm areas. Water weekly or when the top several inches of soil dries out. Fertilize this perennial with a balanced plant food annually each spring.

Phlox are prone to becoming leggy, which can be a good look for a plant used as a spreading groundcover. You can cut back the growth by at least one-third after flowering is complete if you want a full and bushy look. Propagate this plant through division every few years.

Purple Beauty Moss Phlox Spacing

This creeping Phlox will grow 2 to 3 feet across and 3 to 6 inches tall. Plants can be spaced 2 to 3 feet apart for a flowering carpet-like look.
