This playful deciduous shrub embodies the spirit of spring with bunches of large cones with delightfully fragrant lilac blooms and dense, heart-shaped, green foliage. Known for its lively attitude, this shrub produces copious blossoms during its first year, two weeks before other lilacs bloom, and will live for about 30 years. So fill your vases with alluring cut flowers all spring long. Its large form provides an excellent opportunity to install it as a focal point or statement shrub!
With full to partial sun and well-drained soil, this shrub will flourish. Honeybees, hummingbirds, butterflies, and a myriad of other pollinators will be drawn to its sweet, fragrant scent, making your landscape vibrant and full of life. With an upright growth habit, use this plant in mass plantings, borders, hedges, or as a focal point for your landscape. It was bred to be much more pest tolerant and disease resistant than other lilac varieties and is exceptionally resistant to mildew.
Purple Glory Lilac Care
Purple Glory Lilacs are low maintenance and easy to take care of. Plant this shrub in an area that receives full to partial sun and has well-draining soil containing plenty of rich organic material such as compost. Place mulch over the plant's roots, avoiding the base of the trunk. Water your lilac when the first 2 inches of soil are dry to the touch and a bit more frequently during the first few weeks of establishment.
After the blooming period finishes, prune the top of your shrub to the desired height using pruning shears or a small saw. Remove all spent blooms, and trim any suckers at the base of the trunk. Next, clip off a few larger branches from the inside to expose the center of the shrub to more light and air circulation. Finally, trim back any diseased or dead-looking branches, as well as any branches that are tangled together. Pruning will ensure vigorous blooming for the next season!
Purple Glory Lilac Spacing
Purple Glory Lilacs can grow to a mature height of 12 to 15 feet tall and a width of 8 to 12 feet wide. Plant them with enough space to allow for proper growth, about 12 feet apart, and don't crowd the sides with other tightly packed shrubs or plants.
