Welcoming the earliest blooming perennial plants to your springtime garden is a gift that keeps giving year after year. Purple Pixie Barrenwort is an early spring bloomer with magical orchid-like flowers. The plant has deep violet-purple flowers with white spurs alongside fine, green foliage. The heart-shaped leaves emerge in shades of burgundy and will mature to olive green with maroon margins. Purple Pixie Barrenwort has delicate and incredibly beautiful flowers that are truly one of springtime's many gifts.

Native to woodlands, Purple Pixie Barrenwort is hardy to zone 4. The plant is deer resistant, drought tolerant, and even provides erosion control as a groundcover. Purple Pixie Barrenwort has a compact habit with foliage that is semi-evergreen. This plant is a great choice as a groundcover, in beds and borders, garden edging, and underplantings.

Purple Pixie Barrenwort Care

Purple Pixie Barrenwort likes a shady location in full to part shade. The plant will take a few years to mature to full size. Choose a location in clay, loamy, or sandy soil that is well drained but moist. Purple Pixie Barrentwort thrives in acidic to neutral soil. This plant is not a heavy feeder; add a balanced granular fertilizer once a year in the springtime.

Purple Pixie Barrenwort is semi-evergreen; as the winter goes on its foliage will begin to brown and shrivel at the lower end of its growing zone. Prune these old leaves to the ground in late winter to reveal the magical early flowers. Plants can be dug up and divided in the fall.

Purple Pixie Barrenwort Spacing

Purple Pixie Barrenwort can reach 12 inches high with a 24-inch spread. Space plants 15 - 20 inches apart to create a solid groundcover.
