The Renown German Bearded Iris is loved for its large white and yellow flowers held aloft on strong green stems. Its flowers consist of ruffled oyster white petals and a yellow throat. The blooms are lightly fragranced, which makes them even more wonderful as a cut flower. Growing to around 30 to 40 inches tall, this bearded iris provides elegance in spades when it blooms in spring to summer.
The Renown German Bearded Iris is a rhizomatous perennial that is hardy in zones 4 to 9. Being both deer and rabbit resistant makes it especially suitable for countryside locations. Drought tolerant once established, this bearded iris is easy to grow and care for. Grow this perennial in a mixed border or cutting garden, and group several together for the best color display.
Renown German Bearded Iris Care
For the biggest and showiest blooms, grow Renown German Bearded Iris in full sun. This iris tolerates most soils, but requires good drainage to prevent the rhizomes from rotting. Water often for the first growing season to establish a good root system. After establishing, these plants can cope with dry spells. A low-nitrogen granular fertilizer applied in early spring will promote the best blooms.
Deadhead the first flush of flowers to encourage reblooming later in the year. Remove dead foliage after it has died back in the fall. Divide clumps every 3 to 5 years.
Renown German Bearded Iris Spacing
The Renown German Bearded Iris grows to 30 to 40 inches tall and 12 to 24 inches wide. Space plants around 2 feet apart to prevent overcrowding.
