Light violet purple and white fully double blossoms dance above dark green succulent-like foliage to provide you with a gorgeous display of color from spring until fall. Rockapulco Wisteria Double Impatiens is a showy color combination amongst the Rockapulco Double Impatiens series and she’s not afraid to show it. This improved hybrid of the parent plant I. walleriana will show you her moves and light up your part to full shade garden.
Impatiens are native to East Africa, Zones 10 to 11b, where they grow in the tropical rainforests from Kenya to Mozambique. Hot humid weather interrupted by dry spells, and growing as an understory plant to the tall trees shading it from above, it enjoys the dappled sunlight and moisture that reaches it from above. In cold winter regions, it is grown as an annual to great advantage, either as a container plant or as ground cover in part to full shady areas in Zones 3-9.
Rockapulco® Wisteria Impatiens Care
To care for your double impatiens, work to mimic its native habitat. Moist rich well draining soil, pH level around 5.5 to 6.2, consistent moisture with some dry periods tolerated, and a regular feeding schedule with a slow release fertilizer twice in the season, or a water soluble fertilizer every two weeks for your container plants. Rockapulco can take hot humid full shade conditions and is specially bred to resist powdery mildew, a fungal disease that has plagued impatiens for decades, making this new cultivar the perfect addition to your full shade garden.
Deadheading is not required for Rockapulco, but it wouldn’t hurt if you wanted to clean it up before it drops its spent blossoms. This will help to promote increased flowering. Pruning the plant itself in midsummer will help it to remain more compact and focus its energy on flowering once more. Shearing it down to about ½ of its volume will not hurt it and will reward you with new branches and more flowers.
Rockapulco® Wisteria Impatiens Spacing
Space your new plants 10 to 12 inches apart. Impatiens will grow to about 20 inches tall and 24 inches wide, so give it room to grow. Water, feed, repeat. It is relatively easy to maintain and get great results in late spring to early summer. Pair double impatiens Rockapulco Wisteria with begonia, euphorbia, coleus, browallia, torenia and lamium for awesome color and texture variations and to create a beautiful shade garden that will last until the first frost.
