Here is a Clematis with a unique touch, bell shaped flowers. Deep violet purple buds burst open to 2 to 3 inch nodding bell shaped flowers with curled ends in a violet blue with an icy lavender edge, looking like pixie bells all along the dark green foliage. This is one of the longest blooming clematis, starting its blooms in June and going through to September. Pair this lovely bell flower with pink and white star shaped clematis for a beautiful presentation. Consider also companion planting with roses or other flowering perennials to provide the valued shade at the foot of this lovely vine.
Bred by renowned Japanese horticulturist Kazushige Ozawa to be the primary single blossom in a tea ceremony, Japanese Clematis presents perennial gardeners a unique shaped clematis that will quickly become one of your favorites. Hardy in Zones 4 to 8, it can winter over in harsh winter regions with ease. The bell shaped flowers nod at the end of a gracefully curved stem, creating quite a site when a slight breeze stirs them. You almost think you can hear them. Pair them in proximity to a small garden wind chime for a charming combination.
Roguchi Clematis Care
Plant in full sun to partial shade for best performance. Like other clematis cultivars, Roguchi will appreciate a shaded root zone and her head in the sun. Mulch with a good quality much, cover the root zone with some stones, or plant a ground cover perennial to help shade the roots. This is not a twining vine, meaning you will have to provide upright support and help it to attach to that support for the best presentation. Many gardeners plant them at the base of a Japanese Maple or a large rose bush and let them intertwine amongst the branches for a beautiful effect. Preferring an acidic to neutral soil pH, plant them in clay, sand or loam as long as it is well draining soil. Fertilize with some well composted fertilizer, or a slow release low nitrogen fertilizer in the spring. Water regularly to maintain a consistently moist soil.
Deadheading will provide the needed relocation of energy to more flower production. These make lovely cut flowers, so harvest what you want for use in floral arrangements. Rooguchi Clematis is in pruning group 3. The clematis produces flowers on the new growth of the plant each year. Pruning these plants is easy, in late winter or early spring before new growth appears, cut down to a viable bud about 3 feet above soil level. New growth will quickly fill back in. Mulch in the winter especially in the harsher winter regions. Remove any dead or wilted vines quickly to help avoid clematis wilt, one of the few diseases that can bother clematis.
Roguchi Clematis Spacing
Space your plants about 18 to 24 inches apart and provide a trellis or some sort of upright support for these perennial vines. Growing to about 9 feet tall and spreading out about 24 inches, you will appreciate the vigor and size of this plant when fully mature. This violet blue and lavender color pairs beautifully with bright pink, vibrant red and white flowers as well as a brilliant orange. Have fun mixing and matching perennials to grow alongside this lovely unique perennial vine this spring.
