Rose Creek Abelia (Abelia x grandiflora 'Rose Creek') offers a long season of white, lightly fragrant flowers on a compact shrub with glossy foliage and red-tinted stems. New foliage emerges with a subtle pink tint before maturing to rich dark green. In winter, the leaves shifts toward purple-green and bronze tones, and the stems maintain a pinkish-purple hue year-round. The flowers start in late spring and continue through summer, with rosy sepals adding color after the white tubes age. Our garden designer often places it near walkways because the low mounded habit and mild fragrance reward close viewing.
This selection was developed from open-pollinated abelia seedlings at the Center for Applied Nursery Research in Georgia and named for Rose Creek in Oconee County. It was the most compact plant in that evaluation group, maturing about 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide with a dense rounded form. Rose Creek Abelia is semi-evergreen to evergreen in warmer parts of Zones 7-9 and more deciduous in colder Zone 6 gardens, where winter stem dieback can occur. Use it for low hedges, foundation fronts, pollinator borders, slope plantings, and patio containers where butterflies and hummingbirds can visit the flowers through the warm season.
Rose Creek Abelia Care
Plant Rose Creek Abelia in full sun to part shade, with full sun supporting the heaviest flowering. It grows well in average to organically rich soil that drains well and holds medium moisture. This shrub adapts to clay, loam, or sandy soil and performs best in acidic to neutral soil, with some tolerance of slightly alkaline conditions.
Water deeply after planting and keep the root zone evenly moist while new roots establish. Mature plants handle periods of drought, heat, erosion, and urban conditions, though steady moisture gives better flowering during hot dry stretches. Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer for flowering shrubs, then water the area well. Mulch 1 to 2 inches deep over the root zone to moderate soil temperature, especially in colder gardens.
Prune Rose Creek Abelia in late winter to early spring because it blooms on new wood. Thin out damaged stems, winter-killed growth, and up to one-third of older stems at ground level when renewal is needed. In Zone 6 or exposed sites, choose a spot sheltered from drying winter winds and give container plants extra root protection during extreme cold.
Rose Creek Abelia Spacing
Space Rose Creek Abelia 3 to 5 feet apart, using the closer range for a low hedge and the wider range for individual mounded shrubs. For containers, choose a pot at least 18 to 22 inches wide with drainage holes and a quality shrub potting mix. Container plants need more frequent watering in summer and may need to be moved against a protected wall during winter.
For companion planting, pair Rose Creek Abelia with bee balm, coneflower, catmint, or phlox in sunny pollinator beds with well-drained soil and steady summer moisture. Boxwoods and spirea make useful shrub partners for foundation plantings, giving structure around the airy abelia flowers. In containers, use bacopa, geraniums, or alyssum near the rim for seasonal color that suits the same bright exposure and regular watering schedule.
