A tall annual, Senorita Blanca Spider Flower Cleome is an hybrid improvement over traditional cleomes. Its white spidery blooms sway over dark green foliage making it a wonderful addition to your garden, landscape or large container garden. It is a continuous, long season bloomer that will bring a touch of whimsy to your sun garden.
Improved for performance and vigor, this Senorita Blanca hybrid will not reseed, and does not have sticky foliage or thorns. It sports a slightly smaller bloom than traditional cleomes, but behaves so much nicer in your annual or perennial garden. Native to the SW United States, South American and the West Indies, Zones 10a through 11b, this sun loving annual in Zones 3-9 will give you non-stop blooms from spring until fall.
Señorita Blanca Spider Flower Care
Cleomes are heat and drought tolerant once established and require only occasional watering and fertilizing when planted in ground. Container gardens will require only light maintenance on your part. Although fairly pest resistant, there have been some incidences in the Deep South where stem borers cause wilt and tip die off. The caterpillar responsible for this is the same that attacks cabbage related crops in your vegetable garden and can be controlled with applications of DiPel, a natural bacterium that the caterpillar consumes and dies off, but is safe for use around humans and pets.
Deadheading is not required and no pruning is recommended. Plant this tall annual in the background of your garden beds or landscapes, and as a center spike in your large container garden. Cleome pairs beautifully with petunias, superbenas, calibrachoas, coleus, caladiums as well as many, many other annuals and grasses. Your imagination is your only limit here.
Señorita Blanca Spider Flower Spacing
Spacing is important as adequate air flow is crucial to reduce any chances of plant diseases from forming. Growing to about 4 feet tall and 18 to 24 inches wide, spacing plants 12 to 18 inches apart will help you accomplish this. Cleomes look wonderful in breezy locations as their icy white blossoms sway in the wind, creating a dramatic display for your senses.
