Growing Zones
Dogwood shrubs are excellent when used to give structure to a garden. They are interesting in all four seasons and support all sorts of wildlife. Silky Dogwood is no different, only in that it has a more compact size than most types and works in even the smallest gardens. The naturally dense foliage stays clean and green all summer, providing a backdrop for other shrubs and perennials. The profuse white flowers in early summer turn into gorgeous porcelain blue berries, which feed wildlife throughout the winter.
Silky Dogwood spreads slowly to form thick, informal hedging, perfect for planting along a fenceline or zone 1 of a Rain Garden. These shrubs are also hosts to the Azure butterfly larvae in early spring. Silky Dogwood will tolerate short periods of seasonal flooding and drought conditions. Plant Silky Dogwood at the back of a garden border where the flame-colored stems can be seen.
Silky Dogwood Care
Silky Dogwood grows well in full sun or part shade and tolerates nearly all textures of soil as long as they drain well. Dogwood prefers slightly acidic to neutral pH soil and will require regular irrigation for the first 1-2 years until the roots are established. Mulch the root zone with 2-3 inches of arborist chips or compost. This helps to insulate the roots during cold winters and improve soil texture, making it more moisture retentive.
While the stems mature to a deep brown, regular pruning will keep Silky Dogwood producing younger, brighter-colored branches. Cut back the oldest and least colorful branches to the ground before the foliage emerges in early spring. Fertilize in the early spring also. Apply a slow-release feed with a balanced NPK ratio to the root zone and lightly scratch it into the soil. Dogwood shrubs are very hardy and do not need extra protection in the winter.
Silky Dogwood Spacing
The mature height and spread for Silky Dogwoods are usually 6-8 feet. Place shrubs 7 feet apart, center on center, when planting multiples.
