The Silver Gem Violet or Viola walteri boasts both lovely flowers and stunning foliage, making it a well-rounded addition to a landscape. The dainty flowers are a blueish-purple with subtle white and black accents near the center. The flowers open in spring and early summer, but the foliage continues to put on a charming display after the flowers fade. Heart-shaped leaves gently curl, creating a rounded appearance, and feature a silvery hue with dark veining.
This perennial has a mounding growth habit and is an excellent ground cover. Plant the Silver Gem Violet near the front of a mixed bed or in a container where the stems can cascade over the edge of the pot. Grow the Silver Gem Violet as a perennial in zones 5 through 8.
Silver Gem Violet Care
Plant the Silver Gem Violet in partial sun to full shade. The soil should be neutral to alkaline and well drained. Young or potted plants need a routine watering schedule, but established plants are drought tolerant. Violas are not heavy feeders but do best with light, monthly feedings. Apply a balanced fertilizer monthly during the growing season.
Deadhead the Silver Gem Violet to encourage more flowers and extend the bloom season. Trim leggy growth throughout the season and cut back all growth in late summer or early fall.
Silver Gem Violet Spacing
Mature plants are 3 to 5 inches tall and 6 to 8 inches wide. The Silver Gem Violet can be spaced 6 inches apart from other plants to create a dense carpet of flowers and greenery.
