Growing Zones
The Snow Azalea or Rhododendron 'Snow' is a striking spring-blooming shrub. Large pure white flowers dazzle during the spring. The petals slightly ruffle and gently curl back, exposing the pale green throat. The rounded leaves come to a point and feature a dark green color that provides contrast against the snow-white flowers. The broadleaf evergreen shrub retains its dark green foliage year-round for consistent color.
This Azalea's compact size and rounded form are ideal for an area with limited space. Use this shrub as a focal point or plant it near the front of a mixed bed. Create a low hedge or display the showy blooms on a patio or outdoor space by growing the plant in a container. Pollinators frequent the flowers, providing sound and movement in spring.
Snow Azalea Care
Plant the Snow Azalea in part sun to part shade. About 4 to 6 hours of sunlight is best for this shrub to thrive. Morning sun and afternoon shade are preferred in hot climates. Provide fertile, moist soil with an acidic pH, and ensure excellent drainage. Azaleas like consistent water, so keep the soil damp, but never soggy. Use mulch to retain moisture and prevent the shallow roots from drying out. Apply an acidic fertilizer in the early spring before new growth emerges.
Prune the shrub as needed after the flowers fade. Azaleas set new buds in late summer, so prune before these arrive so as not to interfere with next year’s flowers.
Snow Azalea Spacing
The Snow Azalea stands 3 to 4 feet tall and wide. Plant shrubs 3 to 4 feet apart, center to center, to create a continuous hedge. One shrub can live in an 18-inch wide container.
