The Solar Eclipse Heucherella is all about foliage and puts on a stunning leafy display throughout the year. Reddish-brown lobed leaves with lime green along the scalloped edges stand out in a landscape. This plant also blooms during the spring and summer when tall stems covered in clusters of tiny flowers emerge. The flowers are lovely, but the brilliant foliage is the main attraction for this plant.
Heucherella is a mounded plant with a dense crown. It is very well suited to borders, groundcover, or containers. This plant makes a stunning accent and will add vibrant color to a shady section of a yard or patio. This deciduous plant grows as a perennial in USDA growing zones 4 through 9. The Solar Eclipse Heucherella is an easy-care plant that can handle high heat and does not generally have issues with pests or disease.
Solar Eclipse Heucherella Care
This plant needs between 4 to 6 hours of sunlight, so plant in partial to full shade. Heucherella has medium water needs, so water once a week or when the top few inches of soil feel dry. Soil should be rich, neutral and promote drainage. Apply fertilizer with a 5-10-5 ratio at the start of the growing season.
Pruning is not necessary, and dead or damaged growth can be removed at any time. This plant tends to spread out and grow very dense with time, so it is normal to thin the plant out every few years. Heucherella is an evergreen in warm climates, and it will retain its foliage throughout the winter. The leaves will die back in areas with cold winters, but keep the dead growth in place to help insulate the roots and remove them in the spring.
Solar Eclipse Heucherella Spacing
Solar Eclipse Heucherella will grow 10 inches high and 16 inches wide. Plants can be spaced as close as 14 inches to create a dense mass planting. A container-grown plant requires an 8- to 10-inch pot.
