Bred to be more cold hardy, more compact and to pack a color punch all at the same time, Sombrero Granada Gold is an improved hybrid of the quintessential purple coneflower. With increased vigor, more branching and its lovely vibrant gold petals and bristly centers, Sombrero Granada Gold is going to be the star of your summer garden this season. Hummingbirds, bees and butterflies will not be able to stay away, giving you the assurance that you are doing the environment a favor by encouraging the pollinators and helping them to thrive.
Native to North America, and in particular the United States, coneflowers have been a revered part of gardens for hundreds of years, and there has been some evidence that Native Americans used the plant for medicinal purposes. Growing in open fields and meadowlands, especially in the North and Central portions of the United States, Echinacea has lent its tough, hardiness traits to its cultivars, giving us new colors and sturdier, more compact growing perennials. They are hardy in Zones 4 to 9. Northern gardeners will want to plant these lovely perennials in full sun for best performance, and Deep South gardeners will find it thrives best with a little afternoon shade during the hottest months of summer.
Sombrero® Granada Gold Coneflower Care
Categorized as an easy to grow perennial, Echinacea prefers a well drained soil, but will tolerate a wide range of fertility from extremely poor, rocky soil to rich fertile soil. It prefers a sandy loam soil of average moisture, but it is drought tolerant once it has become established. It also tolerates a wide range of soil pH levels, becoming an efficient user of the nutrients it finds in whatever soil it is planted in. The only intolerance it has beside no sunshine, is soggy wet soil. It does prefer a full sun location, but will tolerate some shade. It may not flower quite as freely with a shaded location. Fertilizer is typically not needed and is not encouraged, although you can work in some well composted organic material when you plant if you feel your soil is particularly poor.
Deadheading will encourage continued and increased blooming. Cut stems back to the first set of leaves. This compact grower is well branched and can send up dozens of blooms per plant each summer. If you would like to give your local songbirds a treat, leave some spent flower heads on the plant to provide a great source of seeds to them. They make an interesting winter feature even when dormant. Trim plant down to the ground in the late winter to prepare for new spring growth. Mulch root zone in harsh winter regions to protect against frost heaving.
Sombrero® Granada Gold Coneflower Spacing
Space your plants 22 to 24 inches apart to provide good air circulation and give them room to grow. They will mature at about 22 inches tall and spread out 24 inches. They are a healthy plant for the most part, but powdery mildew can set in if it is planted in the shade and kept wet too long in the evenings. Plant in full sun and water in the mornings to prevent plant diseases from setting in. Want a bright spot of color in your garden this summer? Plant Sombrero Granada Gold Coneflower, you will not regret it.
