Growing Zones
Sonic Bloom Red Weigela will provide a dramatic patch of red color in your garden or yard from spring until frost. No deadheading is required for continuous bloom. If you favor spring-flowering plants but become disappointed when their flowering period is over, this is the plant for you. Flowers appear in singles or clusters and stand out against the dark green narrow-leaved deciduous foliage.
Weigela florida 'Verweig 6' is a no-maintenance shrub. It can be grown in USDA planting zones 4 to 8 in full sun conditions. This medium-sized shrub will reach between 4 and 5 feet in height and width at maturity. It grows in a dense mounded form with arching branches. Very hungry deer will eat almost any plant, but they tend to stay away from this one.
Sonic Bloom Red Weigela Care
This shrub prefers well-drained soils but can be grown in a wide variety of soils and is tolerant of urban conditions. Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds will be attracted to the bright red lipstick hued trumpet-shaped blossoms. Flowers appear on both new and old wood. The Sonic Bloom series of weigela won the 2019 Flowering Shrubs of the Year award. If desired, fertilize in early spring with formula recommended for woody plants or roses.
Sonic Bloom Red Weigela Spacing
Sonic Bloom Red Weigela is a great choice for an ornamental hedge, foundation planting, as a focal point in your garden, part of a shrub border or as a backdrop to a perennial garden. It also makes a great container plant. Plant multiple species 5 to 6 feet apart on center.
Landscaping Tip: Weigela has an elegant, arching habit that functions as an anchor to large beds. Select your favorite of the reblooming Sonic Bloom series for color that lasts much longer than conventional weigela.
