Hemerocallis 'South Seas', a fabulous Daylily cultivar, will bring a touch of tropical to your garden. South Seas features coral-colored flowers with golden, red, and pink highlights. The flowers are fragrant, highly ruffled, and larger than most daylilies. This daylily has twice as many chromosomes (tetraploid) than the species, accounting for the bigger flower size and sturdy stems. It has grass-like strappy green leaves that are attractive even when the plant is not in bloom.
This perennial forms a dense clump of arching grassy foliage that will reach 32 inches tall and 24 inches wide. This daylily starts blooming in July and will rebloom later in the summer. It is an herbaceous perennial and will go dormant in the winter. Daylilies tolerate harsh conditions, including urban pollution, slopes, extreme temperatures, drought, poor soil, salt, and black walnut trees. Add groups of South Seas to a tropical-themed garden, or use it to edge a sunny perennial border or garden path. This daylily also makes a refreshing display in containers on your front porch or patio.
South Seas Daylily Care
This perennial grows well in full sun to part shade. It adapts easily to different soil types, including clay and sand, and tolerates hot dry sites. It is not particular about soil pH or fertility levels. Water South Seas regularly during the growing season to establish a strong root system and promote flowering. Apply a thick layer of organic compost around the root zone to conserve moisture and improve the soil quality.
Deadhead regularly to encourage rebloom. Remove any dead foliage in early spring before new growth emerges. You can divide daylilies any time of year, as long as the ground isn’t frozen.
South Seas Daylily Spacing
When planting in groups, space individual plants approximately 18 inches apart on center and stagger the planting rows.If growing in a container, select a frost-proof pot with good drainage and a diameter of at least 16 inches. Size up the container every year and replace the potting soil.
