Spring Sonata Indian Hawthorn (Rhaphiolepis indica ‘Wilcor’) is a compact, evergreen shrub prized for its year-round beauty and reliability. Glossy, deep-green leaves provide a lush backdrop for the profusion of delicate white blossoms that appear in spring—blooming 2–3 weeks later than most other hawthorn varieties for an extended floral display. After flowering, dark purple fruits form, adding seasonal interest through fall and winter while also attracting birds and other wildlife.
This versatile shrub is an excellent choice for foundation plantings, accents, informal hedges, and mass plantings. Its naturally rounded shape and dense foliage make it both attractive and functional, while its salt tolerance makes it well-suited for coastal landscapes. Butterflies and pollinators are frequent visitors, bringing even more life to the garden.
Spring Sonata Indian Hawthorn Care
Plant in full sun to partial shade in well-drained, average soil. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce as the shrub becomes more drought tolerant. Fertilize once in early spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering. Minimal pruning is required, though light shaping can be done after blooming if desired.
Spring Sonata Indian Hawthorn Growth & Spacing
This variety maintains a tidy, compact form, typically growing 3–4 feet tall and 4–5 feet wide. For shrub borders or mass plantings, space plants 6–7 feet apart on center. When creating an informal hedge, space 4½–5 feet apart for a dense, natural screen.
