Tall, graceful spires of scarlet red blooms will dazzle you. The bronzing on the green leaves perfectly complements the cardinal-red color of the blossoms. Hummingbirds and butterflies will be attracted to your garden by the tubular flowers that appear in its first year. Lobelia speciosa has a long, summer bloom period. It grows to a height of 22-28 inches, thriving in wet locations.

Starship Scarlet Bronze Leaf™ has a growth habit that is upright, sturdy, and bushy. It has no serious insect or disease problems; deer and rabbits avoid eating it. Native to North America, it is well adapted as a garden plant. The name, Lobelia, honors Matthias de l'Obel (1538-1616), a French physician and botanist. Use this plant in the role of ‘filler’ in combination pots or mass them in the border where they will add late summer height and color. Use them in difficult wet locations, and in rain gardens. They make beautiful cut flowers – cut them when the flowers are almost open.

Starship Scarlet Bronze Leaf Cardinal Flower Care

This is an easy-care plant that thrives in rich, medium-to-wet soils of any texture. Plant it on a cloudy day, or in the late afternoon, to reduce transplant shock. Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the root ball. Unpot the plant, gently loosening the roots to encourage good growth. Plant with the top of the root ball even with the surrounding soil. Water thoroughly and mulch lightly. You may apply a light fertilizer after new growth appears. Locate your Cardinal Flower in part sun to sun. When planting it in dry soil, site it in a location with part shade (4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight).

Deadheading spent flowers will encourage reblooming. In cold climates before winter, prune the dead stalks and stems and add mulch to protect the root system. Starship Scarlet Bronze Leaf™ is stunning in containers, just do not let them dry out completely, making sure they have adequate drainage. In mixed containers, pair them with other moisture-loving plants.

Starship Scarlet Bronze Leaf Cardinal Flower Spacing

Companion plants for this lobelia are ornamental grasses and coreopsis. Space your plants 16-22 inches apart from center to center.

Guide: How to Care for Your New Plant(s)

Plant Addicts Warranty - 1 Year (Extra Purchase Required)

We encourage all plant lovers to purchase the Plant Addicts Warranty, whether you're a new gardener or an expert. There are many variables outside of anyone's control that can cause a plant to die. Hungry animals, drought, poor soil conditions, over watering, diseases & pests are all good examples of what can cause plants to die. The Plant Addicts Warranty is a 1 year warranty protecting you from all of the unknowns and will replace your plant if something were to happen to it.

The warranty is purchased on a per plant basis and must be purchased at the same time as the plant(s). We will cover 100% of the price of the plant, but the warranty does not cover shipping costs. SImply let us know if your plant has died within 1 year of receiving it and we will get you a new one shipped out as soon as possible (depending on the time of the year and availability). We may ask for photos for documentation purposes, but we try to make the process as easy as possible.

Guarantee and Warranty

Plant Shipping

Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.

Winter to Early Spring

We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.

Summer

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.

Fall into Winter

We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!

Winter

Get your order in early to reserve your plants for Spring planting!

Once your plant is shipped you’ll receive an automated email with tracking information.
