No southern garden is complete without a camellia or two, and Stephanie Gold is one is to die for. It’s loaded with hot-pink, semi-double flowers that have a golden cup of stamens at each center and is definitely a shrub you can see from far away when it blooms late in the year, October through November. Its lustrous dark evergreen leaves create the perfect backdrop for the stunning blooms, so it makes a terrific addition to the shrub border or as a foundation plant in full sun to dappled shade.
The blossoms are lovely as a cut flower, either on the branches in an arrangement or you can float several in a bowl where you can enjoy their delicate beauty up close. When not in bloom, you can cut branches of the leathery foliage and add them to holiday decorations or to bouquets year-round.
Stephanie Gold Camellia Care
Camellias do great in part shade locations, but they will take full sun as long as you provide regular watering. They appreciate evenly moist, well-draining acid soils. If your soil is not very acidic, you can add a commercial soil acidifier each year, as well as a balanced granular fertilizer formulated for broadleaf evergreens. Camellias generally need no pruning if you give them enough room to reach their mature size. The occasional dead or wayward branch can be snipped off as needed, but save any major pruning for spring so you don’t cut off the flower buds.
Stephanie Gold Camellia Spacing
Stephanie Gold camellia works well in garden beds mixed with other shrubs or perennials. It can also be planted in large containers to adorn a walkway or door. When planting in beds, give it enough room so that it can reach maturity comfortably, as it gets 4-5 feet tall and 3-4 feet wide. If you are planting more than one, you can plant them closer—1.5 to 2 feet on center—so they fill in and create a mass.
