Growing Zones
Loved for its spectacular fall foliage color, the Sugar Maple also has many other attributes. Botanically named, Acer saccharum, the Sugar Maple is a tall deciduous tree that can grow to 60 to 70 feet. As the temperatures drop in the fall, its dark green foliage explodes into vibrant orange, yellow and red hues. Its large canopy can provide welcome shade relief during the summer months.
A native of northeast America and Canada, the Sugar Maple is considered hardy throughout zones 4 to 8. It forms a large, round-to-oval canopy that is always appreciated by the birds. This tree is suitable for open spaces where it can grow to its full potential.
Sugar Maple Care
With its large mature size, you will want to plant this tree where it will be free of any potential overhead or structural worries. Soil-wise, it prefers a slightly acidic, deep, fertile and well-drained substrate without compaction. Happiest in full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. Irrigate regularly for the first few years until it is established. Avoid fertilizing for the first year after planting.
Prune only in late summer when the sap levels are at their lowest. Prune to remove dead, damaged, and diseased branches or those that are crossing or rubbing.
Sugar Maple Spacing
When mature, the Sugar Maple can grow to an impressive 60 to 70 feet tall and 50 to 60 feet across. Due to its eventual size, plant each sugar maple at least 50 feet apart.
