Luscious, juicy, and vibrant are just a few words that could be used to describe this new miniature rose introduction. Sunblaze® Watermelon Miniature Rose produces small but fully double, watermelon-red flowers that keep blooming all summer long no matter the heat or humidity. All Sunblaze® roses are modern English roses bred to be highly disease resistant. They are not grafted and grow on their own rootstock, making this miniature rose extremely hardy, able to survive winters in USDA zones 5-11.

The diminutive size of Sunblaze® Watermelon Miniature Rose is ideal for planting as a weed-smothering groundcover in a garden bed or as a pot-grown specimen to decorate a tabletop or window box. Deer have been known to browse roses, especially the tender flower buds. These plants can quickly regrow and are rarely permanently damaged. Container-grown plants placed near houses, decks, or patios tend to be largely ignored by deer and rabbits.

Sunblaze® Watermelon Miniature Rose Care

Miniature roses appreciate well-draining, rich, loamy soil that retains moisture. Plant them in full sun for best performance. For pots and hanging baskets, use a peat-free, all-purpose outdoor potting mix. These mixes are lighter than garden soil and provide better drainage. Sunblaze® is a heavy-blooming plant that requires fertilizing throughout the growing season. Apply a slow-release fertilizer formulated for roses and/or tomatoes as new growth emerges in the spring and again as the plant starts flowering. Look for an NPK ratio around 1-4-3 to support blooming.

Miniature roses need only light pruning or deadheading to keep the shape compact. As the flowers fade, cut back rough-looking stems with garden shears. Early in the spring, prune out any stems damaged by the winter to avoid problems with diseases and pests. If necessary, the whole plant can be cut back to within 6-8 inches of the soil to rejuvenate growth.

Gardeners in USDA zones below 5 can grow this rose as a houseplant. Bring the pots indoors well before the first freeze in fall. Bright, indirect light indoors is ideal to keep your miniature Rose thriving through the winter months.

Sunblaze® Watermelon Miniature Rose Spacing

Sunblaze® Watermelon Miniature Rose reaches 18 inches tall and wide at maturity. Space plants 12 inches apart if planting a groundcover. Containers need at least a 10-inch diameter for growing individual roses.
